Homework 5

Hope

The protagonist - an androgynous 14-year-old-girl, whose mother has died to cancer 3 months prior to the game events. She's clever and sarcastic, but a little shy in her social interactions, probably due to the fact that she's constantly ignored by her father. She as all the technical know-how for her age, but lacks the real world experience for it. Always having been reliant on her mother, she's never made any friends, for her dry wit makes her occasionally abrasive to talk to. Her journey takes her through grief, joy, loss and discovery, to a place where she can accept pain as a part of life, using her experience to grow into a braver person.

Teddy

The sidekick - a 12-year-old boy that skips school for the comfort of the city. Shy, nervous and unsuspecting, he's been bullied for his stutter and emotional vulnerability. His parents are separated, and his mother is currently unemployed and struggling with her own mental health issues, which is why Teddy doesn't wish to burden her with his problems, fearing it would make matters worse for her. Lacking self-control when it comes to his emotions, he is often overwhelmed  by his circumstances, breaking down in public. Despite that, he has knowledge of the secret passages and pathways through town having grown up in the area, and is capable of seeing Hope in her grief state. A character that struggles to conform the ideal image of male stoicism, Teddy acts as Hope's student in a way, who is taught to grow through mutual help.

Busker

Tertiary character - a homeless young man that spends most of his time playing music on the street in order to earn coin. Focused on the monetary values, he doesn’t care for Hope’s plea to stop playing his sad song, requiring her to pay first. Abrasive, blatant and superficial, he’s still an excellent artists that “has sold his soul to the Devil”.

Puzzle Master

Tertiary character - a stout middle-aged man that strikes with his loud and bassy voice, welcoming all to solve his brain-teasing riddles. Kind-hearted and wise, he involuntarily guides Hope through her struggles, as his puzzles strike a subconscious note.

Huxley

First antagonist - a "high-class" piece of paper, who spends most of his time bullying those less fortunate than him at school. With a nasal and yet-to-be-developed voice, he struggles with the challenges of puberty, whilst taking it out on others seems like a coping mechanism.

Humphrey

Antagonist’s sidekick - a sidekick to the antagonist, Humphrey lacks any sort of emotional connection to either the main character, nor the antagonist, playing the role of a devious imp that only bolsters Huxley’s hate.

Librarian

Tertiary character - an aged German librarian that has sought refuge in the recluse English town. Evidently coming across an unwelcoming attitude, she mostly keeps to herself and focuses solely on her work, but will respond with kindness if such is forwarded to her first.
