CREATE PHASE

The Short Story

With the initial five weeks concluding the foundation for future game development, it had come time to gather all the necessary research and join together with others to brainstorm our brilliant ideas. Having picked the same subject of interest for our presentation, it was only natural for me to join teams with Lewis Hill who had already partnered with Joshua Lyons. Finding a common language with the two was quick and easy, considering our skills lied in different areas of Game Development while we were all interested in designing a challenging product.

This section of our curriculum followed 7 weeks of ideation and development, as Phase Three was the first section on our way. In it, we were required to look again into the research we have done and begin gamifying the gathered ideas. We were tasked with rounding our choice with only 3 solid game ideas, which would then be presented to the class in the same fashion as we did in the previous phase with our research. Trying to keep our range and variety wide and broad, we had concluded our ideation process on three distinct ideas:

  1. Dream Doctor - A 3D Video Game, where the player is a lucrative dream doctor who delves deep into their patients’ minds. Analysing their dreams in order to find out underlying meanings, the purpose was to collect symbols for your dream journal and help as many people as you can, while solving mind-boggling puzzles and educating yourself on the different dream interpretations.

  2. Join the Dots - A Mobile Game employing the camera, where you'd take a picture of anything you like, as it is then depicted into an allocation of dots. Connecting the dots however you like in order to paint a picture, this game served as a calming and entertaining leisure activity.

  3. Wide Awake - A 3D Endless Runner Game, where the player runs as far as they can throughout the contents of their own consciousness. Avoiding as many obstacles as you can, which are desperately trying to wake you up, and employing your special powers in the lucid dream, while the environment struggles to regain its control, your purpose was to reach the end of the track as fast as possible.

Phase Four marked the further development of the chosen game, which in our case was Wide Awake, in order to better showcase its full potential at the end of the semester in yet another presentation. This time, however, it served the purpose of our GPP (Game Project Proposal), which we could format in a way that best represents our game. We decided to go with this project, because it had seemed like it allowed for the greatest amount of artistic freedom and was the most fun to create and think about.
