Games Design & Art Year 3
PHASE TWO
Further Deep Dive
Following our presentations on Friday the 18th, it had seemed that most people were interested in the exploration of dreams. While I was unable to share all of the information I had gathered on the subject, because of the pressure of time and the complete loss of its perception, it was still the most captivating theme of all. And I agree.

While initially considering the topic of confirmation bias as my main theme, considering its repeating occurrence in my research, I had chosen that the unknown lands of dreamland were a much richer topic. In my feedback, I was advised to look into surrealism and its connection to dreams, sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming, interpretation of dreams as a call of the subconscious, common dreams with their meanings (falling out teeth, f.e) and other topics. The further choice of dreams as the topic to look into during our brief workshop proved to be even more helpful, with the subject cards pointing out fields of research (books, sound, facts, structure, etc). Technically, I was already half-way through my research with the help of the class' 20 minutes search of information.

And so it was decided that my chosen theme would be dreams/dreaming. Preparing a journal at one side and dream interpretation websites on the other, I had braced myself for the full submersion into my own consciousness, described by the mysterious signals of my brain and, according to Freud, childhood trauma and sexual restraints... But that's just Freud.
DREAM JOURNAL EXTRACTS
Monday, 21st of October, 9:00 am
Part of a journalistic party, I travelled to rural Bulgaria in order to investigate rumours of a cannibalistic hillbilly region, which had been subdued under the experimentations of a madman scientist. Bypassing the various traps set out for intruders, my team of three managed to contact several sane victims that have recently been dragged into the village. Decisive to save them from experiencing the horrors of the place, we managed to create an opening in the fences and the energy barrier of the place, quickly transporting the civilians through the mountainous landscape and to safety. Unfortunately, in our crusade, we were caught by one of the henchmen, who attempted to verbally confront us first, before turning into a state of animalistic berserk (kinda like a werewolf). Struggling to avoid getting bitten, we managed to kill him by mauling his head into the ground, while he cackled in a maniacal fury, calling out for the Alpha. Realising that our time is limited, we rushed to save whatever other villagers on our way out, as we suddenly found ourselves in a humid stone city or, rather, town carved into the face of a mountainous valley. My team had gotten into a car and left for the capital, where a report was to be published in four days, directly broadcasted on national TV. In the meantime, I set out to explore the city and get further away from the house of the Alpha, whose presence loomed behind me. On my way, I met a few of my classmates from school, mixed with the ones from uni. Everyone seemed sad, and, at a closer approach, I was notified that Abbie's mother had died, possibly killed. Offering her a hug, I was suddenly transported to a classroom with the opening of my eyes, where my Fine Art teacher from school was explaining how her brother was a fugitive in Japan, having managed to escape captivity, but had to change his name. My best friend had quickly confirmed this information past a search on the Internet, allowing the idle sitting in the room to continue. Everyone else was asking where the Creative Writing seminar will be next and, snapping my temper lightly at them, I notified my classmates to follow the ones that have already been to that class. And before I was carried out into reality, I strangely noticed that everyone was wearing a white paper cloak, which covered half of one's torso if held by the front. What was its purpose? Perhaps, an indication of stature. Perhaps, a result of the Fine Art class.Tuesday, 22nd of October, 7:16 am
Tonight's dream was not as eventful or, perhaps, I cannot remember much of it anymore due to the frequent awakening from external sources. I can remember myself getting into a car, which seat was uncomfortably for me raised to a higher point. Using the vehicle as a way to escape from some unfortunate circumstances, I found myself carefully driving through a street, content with preserving my role as a regular driver and not getting stopped by the patrolling policemen (since I don't have a license). As I finally got a chance to adjust the seating to my height and legs, I suddenly realised I had driven into the cycling area of the pavement. Shocked by the sudden change of my surroundings, I woke up bitter that I couldn't drive adequately.Sunday, 27th of October, 6:27 am
Waking up for a second time, I've decided to transcribe my thoughts on paper before the memory of my dream fades away. My initial dream at 2:16 am was somehow connected to children as if I was looking after them. Anyway, in this instance, I was transported back to my high school, where a fashion show was to take place. A member of a witch coven, I was tasked with enchanting all the guests into some sort of a ritual. I remember a lot of famous people coming in, or at least some Instagrammers I follow in real life. I believe my ability was to possess one body or another, akin to a banshee, for I had the memory of Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) at one point, but was then within Jodie Harsh's body (@jodieharsh), welcoming Austin (@empty.pools) and explaining the whole ordeal to him. For some reason, I did not seem content with keeping my identity undercover. Perhaps, it was due to some kind of attraction to the above-mentioned gentleman, or even a rebellious nature of my character in that universe. Either way, I remember that the most outrageous event of the night (or rather one of them) was a model wearing a gorgeous garment (golden body-tight nude illusion robe/dress with long floppy feather boa sleeves) could not keep up with her clothes, ending up tripping over. For some reason, this event turned into a worldwide support cause, with everyone starting to post an image of two high heels with a winged eye on them (the shoes she was wearing) as some sort of social movement akin to #WeStandWithParis. Either way, that's that. I remember one of the servants who followed me was a resurrected vermin, whom I decided to burn alive/break the idol of his resurrection in public, after he pissed me off, this way starting a fight with another witch within the order. By the end of it, I remember seeing Ariana Grande (@arianagrande) in my English classroom, becoming a "stone-cold Ice Queen". At the sight of the glass she was speaking/singing to being covered in icy particles, I expeditiously made my way to the end of the corridor, jumping off the window into some sort of a laboratory. I had forgotten my student ID for it, for which another woman laughed at me at, so I had to possess her and seek safety that way. This instance reminds me of something about my first dream that night. It was something to do with a second invasion of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) into Bulgaria, helped by the half-breed "pomatzi". I remember I was in my village, hiding away from the patrolling soldiers, while I helped Abbie (again..?) escape her arranged marriage with an officer. I was also saving my dogs there.
PHASE CONCLUSION
Wrapping It Up
Another several weeks and another presentation, which was now focused solely on the previously chosen topic. Despite being generally confident in presentations and talking to people, I seemed to have found my tongue twisting once I actually stepped in front of a group. Not sure how relevant that is now, but surely it is something to pay attention to and work on in the future.

Concluding this phase on the 1st of November, I had gathered a number of beneficial insights by the rest of the class, which offered me more food for thought. Here are some of the ideas I was provided with:
Multidimensional game where actions in one will effect scenarios in the other.
Use the basis of archetypal dreams as the basis of enemy archetypes in a game?
Try and delve into the structure of dreams being used as your level structure possibly. Maybe take your own dreams as first hand research to fuel your ideas.
Mechanics based on sensory elements of dreams - mechanics based on REM sleep cycle? Use attributes such as mood, sleep deprivation, food to change the events of Dreams in a game.
Use the types of dreams as abilities to deal with different situations?
Look at the most common dreams (teeth falling out, being chased, being naked) and look into what these mean.
What technology is used to measure dreams. Could make a game that might predict how the future and how technology will impact dreams e.g. inception
Could look into sleep walking maybe? Do the dreams we have affect how we act?
You could keep a dream log and record all the experiences you have. Then you could gamify one that's interesting.
Maybe something where actions taking place in the real world can alter something in your dream world .
On dreams having different rules your game could have the ability to manipulate the rules f.e manipulating physics.
Forced dreams as an aspect of escapism.
What if the game environment is moving, working by its own, then allow the players to slowing figure out a way to control the environment.
Exploring fear in a safe space is a cool topic, could become a target experience.
Go through a confusing process, journey, with bizarre sounds and visuals, which slowly come to make sense.
Going to sleep, could work as a save point, which creates a loop of a dreaming character always lucid dreaming (kinda inception-ish) but focus on it as a mechanic, choosing to sleep to save and start anew.
Could create a level based game where each level focuses on a different meaning or story commonly found in dreams.
Dreams provide a whole host of game ideas due to their unpredictable and nonsensical nature.
I think that one of the most interesting things about dreams is the significance of locations and natural order.
Looking at things that change depending on the way you look at them - looking through a different lens?
I like the idea of lucid dreaming in terms of limitless control over your surroundings - this could be really interesting to explore in a game context, maybe you could build and control the world around you?
Dreams were a big form of prophecy in Biblical times - those who interpreted them had a lot of power.
Maybe try to develop the representation of locations of objects into your game world. Then take the lucid dreaming indicators and try to turn them into mechanics.
Look at Asklepios and Asklepions for their dream therapy.
An idea where you can invade other people's dreams.
You as a player is trying to help people during nightmares.
Being stuck in a time loop in your dream. Each time you wake up with new information that you have to use to stop a real life apocalypse of some sort.

I was fortunate enough to have had another course mate taking the topic of dreams as their own, as we quickly found common ground and began planning ahead to potentially join teams. As far as where I was going next, I was heavily inspired by both the research I had gathered and the advice I was given, beginning to think about possible game mechanics and where I wanted to go with the chosen subject. It was comforting to find similar interests in the eyes of my peers, even if I hadn't managed to fully express what I had already had in mind in regard to the direction I wished to take.

This phase definitely proved fruitful, allowing for a larger amount of time to be invested in a single topic. I was a little bit disappointed that I didn't fully stick with keeping track of a dream log, because I believe it could've allowed me to come up with even more ideas. Nevertheless, I was happy to have gathered the bread and butter of the design process and looking forward to applying this knowledge into actual game concepts.
